Bangor Area Homeless Shelter

For years the Shelter has asked local churches and synagogues to provide a Sunday evening meal. Every other month, on the 3rd Sunday, 4 Orono UMC members each provide a casserole day of, to which volunteers add a warm potato dish and tossed salad full of veggies for the usual 40 residents.

Wilson Center

“A Multifaith Campus Alliance” founded by Dorothy Clarke and Elwin Wilson, the Center is a haven for “Spiritual Exploration and Multifaith Dialogue”. In addition to offering a $500 Peace Prize for an essay on a selected statement by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., it invites artists to display works, students to preform in an informal Coffee House as well

as collaborating with UMaine’s Hebraic Studies to offer luncheons on current topics. The Wilson Center also offers for a reasonable rent 3 rooms with heat, WiFi, kitchen and 2 community baths included.

Leah Family Orphanage

Leela Thambi, co-founder and Director, serves about 40 children. As a Christian organization, the Orphanage provides food and clothing as well as a school. Throughout the year we receive specified tithes, then, in December, wire them several thousand dollars, part of which gives each child a new outfit and a Christmas gift.

Serving over 2 thousand persons monthly, Crossroads offers an extensive Food Pantry and Thrift Shop, to which Orono UMC brings our donated clothes. In addition, Crossroads receives new gifts during the Advent Season and piles them high for families to pick 3 gifts per child at no cost. The age-appropriate gifts are unwrapped so they can be selected more accurately. Wrapping paper is provided after the gifts are selected.

Welcome to Housing

By way of a facility in Old Town, WTH offers free household items – any thing from flatware to beds and recliners, when available - to anyone who is moving from homelessness to their own place.
